Mathematics Staff:: Miss A Twyford (Head of Department), Miss K Morgan (Second in Maths), Mr N Middleton, Mr J Poolman, Mr W Browne, Mr W Speke, Mr C Searby, Mr S Gosling

At Fitzharrys we run a 5 year GCSE scheme of work.

Exam board: AQA specification 8300.

Assessment:  Three 1h30 written exam papers. One calculator and two non-calculator for both foundation and higher tier.  Each paper is worth 80 marks and all are equally weighted.

Syllabus details: Students are required to demonstrate their ability in the following skills areas:

AO1 - Straightforward questions will be asked set within realistic contexts. The mathematics required will generally be clear to candidates and any interpretation of the result will be simple.

AO2 - Within AO2, candidates will be expected to choose the mathematics and/or select the steps required to reach a solution to questions set within realistic contexts. They may also be required to interpret or communicate the result with reference to the context.

AO3 - Within AO3, candidates will be expected to solve problems using mathematical skills in context, combining the skills of representing, analysing and interpreting to produce a solution. Contexts may be novel or unfamiliar.

Years 7 and 8

1. Number operations
2. Place value, ordering and rounding
3. Equations, formulae, expressions and identities
4. Sequences, functions and graphs
5. Integers, powers and roots
6. Statistics
7. Fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio and proportion
8. Measures and Mensuration
9. Probability
10. Properties of shape and construction

Once we have covered all ten of the topics we will use the remaining time in Year 8 to revisit the topics in which students are not yet secure.

At the end of Year 8 students will take a calculator and non-calculator Foundation tier GCSE exam paper, the results of which will set them for Year 9.

Keeping you involved

You can view the results of all of your son/daughters topic tests online at minitest.co where you can sign up for email updates following every exam. Please contact atwyford@fitzharrys.oxon.sch.uk for more information on how to sign up.

Emails will inform you about how your son/daughter has performed on the assessment as well as showing you what topics they can work on to improve.

Years 9, 10 and 11

Students will cover the following topics

At the end of Year 9 and 10 students will take a full set of GCSE exams to track their progress towards their target GCSE grade.

We aim to finish content with students by the Autumn Term of Y11 and begin revision following the Y11 November mock exams.
