Able, Gifted & Talented

Fitzharrys is an ambitious school with high expectations. Good teaching, challenge and a continuous focus on growth mindset supports everyone in developing their skills and talents. Above and beyond this, our ‘Able, Gifted and Talented’ students experience extra stretch and challenge through a rich range of extra-curricular opportunities.

Our well-established partnership with Abingdon School involves students working together in many subjects and in sport. Student mentoring between our schools supports that extra stretch and challenge. Fitzharrys students also take part in Latin Club lead by a teacher and students from Radley College, with some taking Latin GCSE.

Fitzharrys students excel in national and international competitions, including Maths Challenge and Modern Languages Olympiad. Our Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) Club is a great success; in 2017/18, our Year 8 students won the Oxford University Physics competition. Fitzharrys' Debate Club were the youngest participants in a competition in London, while our future lawyers participated in an Oxfordshire Magistrates' Court competition.

Fitzharrys passionately champions the arts and is proud to have achieved Artsmark Gold status. Students enjoy many varied arts opportunities including regular theatre workshops; recent workshops include performing self-penned monologues at the Oxford Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and a joint production of Romeo and Juliet with Abingdon School in the National Schools’ Shakespeare Festival. Musicians perform in our choirs and bands in theatres and concert halls in Oxfordshire and beyond. Avid readers enjoy participating in the Carnegie Book Awards Shadowing competition with peers from all six senior schools in Abingdon. Fitzharrys students also excel in the sporting arena, and we encourage sporting success by supporting students who play or perform at county, national and international level.

Our links with Abingdon School and St Helen & St Katharine give our students access to enhanced careers information, providing advice for those considering medicine and other subjects at university. Fitzharrys students have a strong track record of progressing on to established universities including Oxbridge as well as professional apprenticeships.
