Sustainability
At Fitzharrys School we are working hard to improve how sustainable we are. We work with Oxfordshire County Council, as well as other local organisations and charities, and our school council Sustainability Reps take a leading role. Please watch the video to hear our students discussing their work in assembly.
Sustainability Presentation (30/06/2025)
Our key areas of focus are:
Site Rewilding
Our goal is to improve the wildlife value of the site, increase biodiversity, and prioritise nature. We intend to give students increased access to nature, to recognise and utilise its proven benefits for mental health and wellbeing, and to engage students in the improvement and maintenance of the school site.
Support and get involved:
One way you could help us would be by volunteering to be part of our Gardening Group, who meet once per month to maintain some areas of the school grounds. Contact Mrs Twyford via the school office if you are interested.
Our Eco Club is also an important part of our rewilding work. If you would like more information or to support Eco Club with its activities, please contact the Science department via the school office.
Site Management
We intend to make sustainable choices in the resourcing of the school, from the small changes to the radical. In doing so, we intend to reduce the school’s negative impact on the environment and climate, and to model the positive choices that we can all be making to the school community.
Support and get involved:
We have removed plastic bottles from our canteen, for reasons of sustainability; please make sure that your child has a refillable water bottle every day.
Careers
We intend to provide students with opportunities to consider green careers. Our students are instrumental in the leadership of our sustainability action plan, taking on significant roles at each stage.
Support and get involved:
Are you involved in green and sustainable careers? Could you support this work by volunteering at one of our careers events? Please contact Miss Hartley via the school office.
Curriculum
We intend to ensure that all students have access to a high-quality climate curriculum, acknowledging that responsibility for this does not merely lie with the Science and Geography departments. We intend to teach carbon literacy and to combat climate anxiety with a proactive, positive, and research-based approach to teaching and learning to do with the climate.
Support and get involved:
We are always interested in hearing from anyone who might be able to offer an assembly or a visit to school to support with our teaching of climate literacy: please contact Miss Hartley via the school office.
Travel
Our goal is to reduce the numbers of cars outside the school site at the beginning and end of the school day, and to promote sustainable transport modes within our community. We work with Modeshift Stars to continue to develop our travel plan, with initiatives like Dr Bike's mechanic visits, the Big Walk and Wheel, and the Park and Stride.
Support and get involved:
Please avoid collecting your child from directly outside of school at the end of the day. Visit our Travelling to School page to find out more about the Park and Stride.
Please do talk to your child about safe travel to school by bike. The government safety resources are helpful for this conversation: Cycle Safety – THINK!
