Sixth Form: JMF6-Abingdon

JMF6-Abingdon is the sixth form provided by Fitzharrys and John Mason Schools, rated 'outstanding' by Ofsted, delivering high quality, post-16 education to young people in the Abingdon area and beyond.

At JMF6-Abingdon, our ambition is for every student to access outstanding learning opportunities, which encourage them to become academically successful, happy, confident and inquiring young people.

We believe that you have the potential to make a difference in the world and want you to be ambitious in your career choices. JMF6-Abingdon offers you the very best teaching, high-quality careers advice and guidance, a caring and knowledgeable pastoral support team, and a wide range of opportunities and experiences designed to help you develop talents, interests and skills.

Our ethos is based on the principle that each student is an individual, is exceptional and is valued. All students are guided towards meeting professional standards academically and personally.  As well as setting challenging and aspirational academic targets, we also support students in acquiring skills and qualities which will help them develop into mature adults. This is achieved through our enrichment programme, the element of our provision that Ofsted highly rated. Uniquely amongst local 16-19 provision, all students take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award Scheme and the Extended Project Qualification. Within these programmes, students further develop qualities of leadership, organisation, responsibility and teamwork: the wider qualities looked for by universities and employers.

JMF6-Abingdon is rated outstanding for good reason - it provides professional and caring academic and pastoral provision with proven success in both areas.

JMF6-ABINDGON Application process

Any students applying to JMF6-Abingdon will need to complete an application form. Applications should normally be made before the February half-term holiday.

In February and March, prospective sixth form students are interviewed by the Director of JMF6-Abingdon: this is an opportunity to discuss any further education or career plans that you may have and to make sure that the A levels you are considering will enable you to progress on your chosen path.

We welcome students from outside of Fitzharrys and John Mason schools, and you are invited to make an appointment to visit, discuss your application and have a tour of our facilities.

Following successful interviews, you will be sent a letter offering you a conditional place and outlining some activities you will be encouraged to take part to help set you up for a successful start to your sixth form experience.

In late June/early July, a week of taster sessions is organised across the two school sites for future year 12 students. As well as discovering more about the many enrichment opportunities available through JMF6-Abingdon, you will be able to experience lessons across both school sites and make some new friends. We know the move to Sixth Form is important so we take the time to get it right. This will include some preparation activities for the summer.

Once students have received exam results in late August, you are invited to a ‘Welcome to the Sixth Form’ interview. At this meeting, GCSE results will be confirmed and final choice of subjects will be made.

Sixth Form starts at the beginning of September with a day of induction and team building, and then your new courses begin.
